Name and date on exam photos

Some Indian exam portals want a photo with the candidate's name and the date of photograph printed below it, at a fixed size and inside a file-size range. The strip is a border job; the rest is not.

What the instructions describe

Secondary guides to NEET UG 2026 describe a JPG of 10 to 200 KB with a white background, the face covering most of the frame, and the name and the date of taking the photo printed at the bottom. Guides to the UPSC online application describe a JPG of 20 to 300 KB with the same strip, and report the pixel size inconsistently — 350 × 350 in one place, up to 1000 × 1000 in another. Neither source is the notice.

How the strip is measured

The strip is a share of the finished height — 18 % to start — so the file keeps the exact pixel size the form asks for and the photo is fitted, never stretched, into the space above it. At 413 × 531 pixels (3.5 × 4.5 cm at 300 PPI) the strip is 96 pixels and the photo area 413 × 435. Name and date are set in black on white, each line as large as the strip allows, in capitals by default.

The KB range is met by trying JPG qualities: the highest quality whose file is under the maximum is kept. If the file would still be too large at quality 50 %, the tool asks before making the pixel size smaller, because the pixel size is usually part of the rule too. 1 KB means 1024 bytes; some portals count 1000, so leave a little room under the limit.

Questions

Is a printed name and date always required?

No. Some exams ask for it, many do not, and the rule can change between years. The official notice for your exam and year is the only authority. Check the current official notice — it overrides this preset.

Can I write the date of today instead of the date the photo was taken?

The instruction is the date of photograph — the day it was taken. The tool here leaves the date empty until you enter it, rather than guessing.

What if the portal rejects my photo?

Portals check things this tool does not touch: the background, the face's share of the frame, the photo's age, sometimes the file's metadata. Re-read the notice; the strip and the KB limit are only part of what it asks.
