WhatsApp DP without cropping: square file, round view

A profile picture is kept as a square and drawn as a circle. Two questions decide whether a photo survives: does it fit the square without being cut, and does what matters sit inside the circle?

Square file, round view

Third-party guides give 640 × 640 pixels as the recommended DP size and about 192 × 192 as the smallest worth using. The app crops anything that is not square when you set it, then shows the square through a circle. Fitting the whole photo into a square first removes the first crop; the circle is the only loss left.

Margins and the circle

The circle touches the middle of each side of the square and misses its corners. A photo contained in the square with a margin m on every side has its own corners at a distance from the centre of √2 × (½ − m) of the side; they fall exactly on the circle when m is about 14.6 %. Smaller margins leave the photo’s corners outside the circle — fine for a landscape, whose corners are usually sky and ground, but not for a group photo with faces at the edges.

Questions

How much of a square DP is hidden by the circle?

The four corners: a circle inscribed in a square covers π/4, about 78.5 %, of it. Anything in the outer 21.5 % — mostly the corners — is not shown in chats.

How big a margin keeps a face visible?

For a face near the middle, any margin works. For a full photo fitted whole, keep a margin of at least 6 % of the side so the photo's corners fall near the circle rather than far outside it; the studio's face check can confirm a detected face sits inside.

Will WhatsApp compress the picture?

Yes, it re-encodes uploads. Starting from an exact 640 × 640 file means the app has nothing to crop, only to compress.
